Newcomers often find themselves with a multitude of questions once they move to a new community. The following information provides pertinent phone numbers, addresses and other details that should make your transition a bit easier. Auto Tags:
Tags may be purchased at the Washington County Government Building, downtown Sandersville (478-552-2144). Newcomers moving from out-of-state are allowed 30 days for purchasing a Georgia license plate. Failure to meet this courtesy deadline may result in a $100 fine. Motor vehicle tags must be updated yearly. The last day of your birth month is the deadline for the purchase of tags. Owners of large trucks cannot buy tags with the following exceptions: some trucks and buses; disabled vets; U.S. Reserve; honorary consul; State Senators and Representatives; U.S. Senators and Congressmen; ex-POWs; street rod; National Guard; veteran organization; commander; high state office holders; Medal of Honor winners. These are all issued by the State Motor Vehicle Department.
Building Permits:
A building permit is required in the cities of Sandersville, Tennille, Harrison and Riddleville for construction of a new home or for remodeling an existing structure. Permits are obtained at the respective City Hall.
Business Licenses:
New businesses within the cities of Sandersville, Tennille, Davisboro, Harrison, Oconee and Riddleville are required to make application for a license at the City Halls.
Cable TV:
Northland Cable (478-552-2905) serves Sandersville, Tennille and some areas of the county.

Drivers’ Licenses:
Newcomers from out of state should purchase a Georgia driver’s license within 30 days. With a valid out-of-state driver’s license, a Georgia driver’s license will be issued upon successful completion of an eye test, road rules test and road signs test. The GA Department of Driver’s Services is located at 115 Jones St. in Sandersville. They are open Thursday and Friday of each week from 8:00 am – 6:00 pm. (678-413-8400).
Electric Service:
Service is provided in the city of Sandersville by the city-owned power company. A hookup fee is required for residences and for mobile homes. Service in residential Tennille, Davisboro, Harrison and Oconee is provided by Washington Electric Membership Corporation (478-552-2577) and the Georgia Power Company (478-552-7341), and a hookup fee is required. Service in Deepstep, Riddleville, Warthen and the county is provided by Washington Electric Membership Corporation (478-552-2577). A deposit is required to hook up an existing residence.
